Project Description:

LTE is a 3GPP standard  for wireless data communications technology and an evolution of the GSM/UMTS standards. The goal of LTE is to increase the capacity and speed of wireless data networks.The LTE specification provides down-link peak data rates of 300 Mbits/s , uplink peak data rates of 75 Mbits/s and QOS provisions permitting round trip time of less than 10ms. LTE supports dyanmic carrier bandwidths , from 1.4 MHz to 20 MHz and supports both FDD and TDD. The architeture of the LTE network is simplified to a flat IP based called the EPC, replaced the GPRS core networks and supports seamless handover with older technolgies like GSM, UMTS  and CDMA2000.

 

Roles: 

·   Since LTE is the evolution of UMTS, it was considerable a big challenge to change the existing Architecture and design. Participate in design discussions with technical architects.

·   Designed HLD and DDL for eRAN 2.0 LTE RRM which includes the architectures  call flows, sequence, use case and state diagrams for  E2E QoS setup for UE and network initiated , data and control plane,  modify and release for both mobile originated and terminated service, context transfer and QoS transfer modification for inter-cell mobility.

TCP was initially designed for wired networks and hence performs poorly in the presence of delay spikes which are especially more frequent in today’s wireless mobile networks. In wired networks, BER is negligible and congestion is the main reason for the packet loss while in wireless networks, there could be various reasons for the packet loss like handover, Real time service prioritization over data services etc.

 

Role:  

·   Analyzed various TCP congestion mechanisms like slow start, TCP Tahoe, Reno, and new Reno, SACK, SNOOP and various other algorithms with the impact of RLP to TCP.

·   Designed and implemented a TCP stack on the BSC called MA (Mobile agent) to differentiate the traffic from wired to wireless networks. Packets from the transmitter are copied into the MA and if the packets are dropped due to wireless matrices, different mechanism is used to retransmit the packet.

·   Designed the TCP stack in the reverse direction, delayed ACK is constructed based on the feedback from wireless matrices.

    EvDO EV-DO was designed as an evolution of the CDMA2000 (IS-2000) standard that would support high data rates and could be deployed alongside a wireless carrier's voice services. It provides forward link air interface speeds of up to 2.4 Mbit/s with Rel. 0 and up to 3.1 Mbit/s with Rev. A. The reverse link rate for Rel. 0 can operate up to 153 kbit/s, while Rev. A can operate at up to 1.8 Mbit/s. Assignments of the RLP’s, each user have a QoS Profile and identifies as a QoS profile ID. Each Profile is associated with a particular DSCP (TOS field in IP packet); PDSN can differentiate the packet and implements the different policies to the different flows (delay sensitive and traffic sensitivity flow) in the network.

 

Role:

·   Designed a new Air interface state machine for the Enhancements in QoS in Network side.

·   Designed and implemented RLP Assignment algorithm for multi- flow packet application.

·   Design and implemented various call flows, state machines and sequence diagrams.
